Basic consonants:

  • ㄱ (g/k): Similar to «g» in English, but soft, closer to «k» in certain positions.
  • ㄴ (n): Similar to «n» in English.
  • ㄷ (d/t): Similar to «d» in English, but soft, closer to «t» in certain positions.
  • ㄹ (r/l): can sound like «r» at the beginning of a syllable and «l» at the end or middle of a syllable.
  • ㅁ (m): Similar to «m» in English.
  • ㅂ (b/p): Similar to «b» in English, but soft, closer to «p» in certain positions.
  • ㅅ (s): Similar to «s» in English.
  • ㅇ (ng, vowel if at the beginning of a syllable): If at the beginning of a syllable, sounds like «ng». At the end of a syllable, it has no sound in itself.
  • ㅈ (j): Similar to «j» in English.
  • ㅊ (ch): Similar to «ch» in English.
  • ㅋ (k): Similar to «k» in English.
  • ㅌ (t): Similar to «t» in English.
  • ㅎ (h): Similar to «h» in English.

  • ㅓ (eo): Similar to «eo» in English, but shorter.
  • ㅗ (o): Similar to «o» in English, but more rounded.
  • ㅜ (u): Similar to «u» in English, but shorter.
  • ㅡ (eu): Does not have an exact equivalence in English, but sounds similar to the «u» in «cup».

Compound vowels:

  • ㅑ (ya): Similar to «ya» in English.
  • ㅕ (yeo): Similar to «yeo» in English.
  • ㅛ (yo): Similar to «yo» in English.
  • ㅠ (yu): Similar to «yu» in English.
  • ㅣ (i): Similar to «ee» in English.

Special member:

ㅐ (ae): Similar to «ae» in English.

ㅔ (e): Similar to «e» in English.

Double vowels:

  • ㅒ (yae): Similar to «yae» in English.
  • ㅖ (ye): Similar to «ye» in English.
